And you thought that only Daenerys Targaryen (AKA – Queen of the Dragons) was bringing destruction and fire! The HBO hackers have brought it to the producers of the hit TV show Game of Thrones.
This week, HBO fell victim to a security breach which saw hackers steal a reported 1.5 terabytes of data from the entertainment company, including the email archive of some senior staff members. Even though they believed they had taken the proper security steps, HBO’s emails were stolen rather easily. Higher ups were not immune from this cyber attack, as HBO’s vice president for film programming also had his emails snatched.
Here is exactly what the hackers demanded from HBO…
Judging from this they seem like a cross between Project Mayhem from the movie Fight Club, and TV’s most infamous group of hackers from Mr. Robot.
To make matters worse, many internal documents have already been leaked by the hackers. This includes one which contains the confidential personal phone numbers and email addresses for Game of Thrones cast members including Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke and Peter Dinklage.
The more info that gets leaked, the more difficult of a situation HBO is in. Pay up? They solve a temporary nightmare, but open themselves up to future (and potentially much worse) ransomwareattacks. Don’t pay? Well, to paraphrase a famous line from the show… HACKERS ARE COMING.
